A roulette table is made up of a large spinning wheel, (although the name itself literally translated from the French means "little wheel"), with 38 numbers. These run from 1 to 36, with the addition of 0 and 00. Each number is assigned a color of red or black, whilst both the zero and double zero are green.
As well as the wheel, a roulette table also houses the actually playing area. This is divided into two areas; for inside betting and outside betting. Inside betting allows for bets to be placed on individual numbers and combinations of numbers, whilst placing bets outside can be done on groups of numbers, on red or black and on odds or evens.
Once bets are placed, the croupier spins the wheel in one direction, and spins a ball along a top rail in the opposite direction.
The spin is very much determined by the individual croupier, and as both the ball and the wheel slow; gravity will drop the ball into a certain section of the wheel. Depending on where this happens to be; players will receive their winnings... Or not!
The simplest roulette bet is against a single number of course; but this is the highest risk of course, with odds of thirty five, or six to one. Chances of winning can be increased with bets against other combinations of course.
As a rule, there are no limits to the number of bets that can be placed at any one time. However, casinos will always have their own "house" rules, which may need to be adhered to.
A popular bet is on red or black, whilst a bet on odds or evens is also heavily laid. This is most likely because the player feels they have a 50:50 chance of taking the win. However, with the zeroes coming into play, colored green; the odds are always weighted towards the house.
This is just a quick introduction to the wonderful game of roulette, and though it is very much a game of chance, it is also a great deal of fun. Just remember though, if you are betting with money that you can't afford to lose, then you shouldn't be making the bet at all.
