There are many different types of Western Digital external hard drive. One of the more popular types of external drives is the My Book series. The My book series have a Mirror edition, World edition, Essential edition, Studio edition, Office edition, Premium edition and Home edition. These My Book drives actually resemble a hardback book with ventilation on the top.

The My Book external drive series is one of Western Digital's most popular external drive series. They come in several different editions including the Home edition, Premium edition, Office edition, Studio edition, Essential edition, World edition and Mirror edition. The My Book external drives tend to resemble a large hardback book. Most of the time them drives are black.

Most of the drives use a firewire connection as this is very fast for data transfer. The Premium edition uses a firewire 400 connection and the Premium Ed edition has two firewire ports and an eSATA connection. The essential edition has an intelligent power management system so that the drive will turn off when it is not being used. This can save power.

A similar edition to the Premium is the Pro edition. However the Pro edition has a firewire 800 connection which is much faster than a firewire 400 connection. The Studio edition of the My Book has four different connection options; a firewire 800, eSATA, USB 2. 0 and firewire 400. The studio edition also can be used for Mac operating systems.

The World edition is an external rive that was specifically designed to be used as a Network-attached storage system. The world edition can also connect to the internet using the Western digital anywhere access.

Western Digital also has very large drives such as the elements external drive. This drive can hold up to a terabyte of data. As with the majority of the western digital drives the Elements drive works through the plug and play function. You don't need to install any special software to run the external drive. Once you connect it the drive will automatically run as it contains all of the software it needs.

The largest of the western digital external drives can hold up to two terabytes of information. Most of the external drives from Western digital operate using a Plug and Play connection. This means that the drive has all of the software it needs to work and you do not need to install anything onto your computer. The drive also will not need an external power source as it gets power through the computer connection.

Several of the Western Digital external drives are specifically made to be sued with Mac operating systems. They contain completely compatible Mac software that is preloaded. The My Passport and My Book can be used for many things including movie and music storage as well as backup.

There are many different accessories for your external drive available from Western Digital. Many of these accessories such as the skins and cases can be used to protect your drive.
